A swift-moving fire at a Canadian military base in Alberta claimed the lives of four members of the Canadian Armed Forces and left dozens injured, authorities reported Saturday. The incident occurred at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, a significant training facility, where high-intensity combat training with live munitions was underway.

Maj-Gen Wade Rutland, commander of the 1st Canadian Division, described the fire's rapid progression, stating it covered a kilometer in as little as 30 to 60 seconds. "It is not normal for a fire to move a kilometre in 30 to 60 seconds," Rutland told reporters. He added that officials had been aware of the fire for several hours before it rapidly approached the training area.

Prime Minister Mark Carney characterized the event as "one of the worst tragedies for the forces on Canadian soil in peacetime." Officials have investigated and ruled out any possibility of terrorist activity or an incident involving oil and gas infrastructure as the cause.

The fire began around 4 p.m. local time. The four deceased soldiers have been identified as Sgt Morgan Wong, Pte Shaun Farrell, Pte Aidan Goulding, and Pte Hayden Lykkemark. Of the 39 individuals taken to hospital, at least 19 remain in critical condition. Emergency department staff described being overwhelmed by the number of patients.

Forecasters had issued a wind warning for parts of Alberta on Saturday, anticipating gusts of up to 90 km/h (66 mph), which likely contributed to the fire's rapid spread. The investigation into the exact cause of the blaze is ongoing and is expected to take at least a month.
