Finnish 'Puppy TV' Offers Solace Amid Global Negativity, Draws Millions
A 24/7 livestream of a dog and her puppies has captivated audiences, providing a break from stressful news cycles and fostering a sense of connection.
In an era often dominated by stressful news cycles, a Finnish public service broadcaster has found an unexpected antidote: a 24/7 livestream of a Lagotto Romagnolo named Hilkka and her six puppies. The program, dubbed "Pentulive" (Puppy Live), has drawn millions of viewers seeking a dose of uncomplicated joy.
The current series follows Hilkka as she cares for her litter of four females and two males, with the website recording 6.6 million visits in just six days. This is the sixth season of Pentulive, which airs on Yle, Finland's national public service broadcaster.
Filmed from a breeder's home, three cameras and lighting are installed in the puppies' whelping box, allowing viewers to observe the canine family around the clock for eight weeks. Last year's series, featuring an English springer spaniel named Muru and her litter of 11 puppies, attracted one million viewers, a number comparable to the audience for the day's evening news.
Pirjo Koskinen, a science journalist at Yle and the creator of Pentulive, told The Times that the public's response has been overwhelmingly positive and somewhat surprising. "We know that Pentulive helps to deal with loneliness, stress and sleepless nights," Koskinen said. "It’s even been said to relieve physical or mental pain."
Koskinen noted that the livestream has been used in classrooms during exam periods and has helped people connect with elderly relatives suffering from dementia. She believes Pentulive "brings out the best aspects of humanity." She suggests that in the wake of events like the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, people may be craving content that offers a stark contrast to the negativity. "What we call 'the Pentulive bubble' is about loving and caring, the miracle of birth and growth and puppies doing funny things," she added.
The program incorporates interactive elements, including a live chat, an online game where viewers can predict puppy milestones, and a weekly podcast.
Miiamaaria Kujala, an adjunct professor of comparative cognitive neuroscience at the University of Helsinki, explained that the livestream provides something often missing in busy modern lives: "something real, genuine, utterly vulnerable that taps your evolutionary meaning as a protector."
Pentulive is described as drawing on the Scandinavian concept of "slow TV," which posits that extended periods of mundane footage can serve as an antidote to fast-paced media. Kujala observed that the program's blend of calm moments and unexpected activity, broadcast live, can provoke intense emotional responses in viewers.
