Jeans remain a foundational element in a stylish wardrobe, yet finding the ideal pair can be a challenging endeavor. This autumn, however, the search for the perfect, long-lasting denim is made more accessible with new brands, updated cuts, and specialized shopping experiences.
Fashion editor Dinah Van Tulleken has identified five key retailers offering a diverse range of denim styles suitable for different body shapes, sizes, and price points.
Wyse London
Independent British brand Wyse, founded in 2015 by Marielle Wyse, aims to create stylish denim for mature women. This season, the brand introduces three new styles: the Iris Turn-Up Wide Leg, the Elsie Barrel Leg, and the Stevie Straight Leg. The Elsie barrel leg is described as a softened, gently curved shape, while the Iris offers a moderate wide-leg with a turn-up detail. According to Van Tulleken, these are some of the most comfortable jeans she has ever worn.
John Lewis
For those prioritizing a wide selection, John Lewis offers a broad range of denim, including designer labels. The store recently added cult Los Angeles-based brand MOTHER to its collection, which features alongside brands such as 7 For All Mankind, FRAME, Good American, Levi’s, PAIGE, and Rag & Bone. The MOTHER Half Pipe Ankle jeans, an off-white barrel cut, are noted as a wearable option. The department store's own brand denim has also seen a surge in popularity, with sales doubling in the past month compared to the previous year.
With Nothing Underneath
Founded in 2017 by former Vogue stylist Pip Durell, With Nothing Underneath, initially known for its shirts, has expanded into denim. The collection includes three styles: the Crawford (classic straight leg), the Fawcett (full-length wide leg), and the Stevie (cropped flare with stretch). The Crawford style in a dark wash is highlighted for its structured denim, high waist, and straight leg, considered an investment at £150 per pair.
Marks & Spencer
Marks & Spencer (M&S) is recognized for its accessible and extensive denim offerings on the High Street. This autumn, prices have been further reduced, with barrel, balloon, and straight leg jeans available in various washes starting from £26. The High Waisted Straight Leg pair in medium indigo is priced at £27. M&S reports that nearly half of its jeans cost £30 or less, with the Barrel Jean and Wide-Leg styles being particularly popular. The company anticipates selling approximately three million pairs of jeans before Christmas.
Trilogy
For enthusiasts of premium denim, boutique Trilogy offers a bespoke denim consultation service. Store staff provide expert advice on brands, fits, and washes. For those unable to visit a store, Trilogy offers a remote consultation service where requirements can be submitted via email. This service helped Van Tulleken find a slim wide-leg PAIGE jean in a faded black wash for £290, deemed suitable for office wear.
