A finance worker has avoided jail time after a year-long stalking campaign against a friend who ended their relationship following a shared outdoor challenge. Louise Heseltine, 48, admitted to stalking Sally Bisset between July 2024 and May 2025.
The harassment began after the pair fell out during the 'Three Peaks Challenge,' a 25-mile hike involving ascents of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough. Ms. Bisset decided to end contact with Heseltine, an analyst for a building society, after realizing their views and interests did not align well during the strenuous activity.
Heseltine struggled to accept the sudden cessation of contact, labeling Ms. Bisset a 'mean girl.' She proceeded to pester her former friend with phone calls, texts, and emails, despite Ms. Bisset making it clear that the contact was unwanted. Heseltine even sent an email in January 2025 stating, "I'll risk a restraining order to build a bridge," indicating awareness that her behavior was unwelcome.
In a victim personal statement read to Harrogate Magistrates' Court, Ms. Bisset described experiencing a "fixated and obsessive pattern of behaviour." She stated that even when she tried to distance herself, Heseltine used various methods, including letters, cards, and unwanted messages, to maintain contact. Ms. Bisset felt "completely disrespected and helpless" as her wishes were ignored, and expressed that the situation felt manipulated by Heseltine's accusations.
Ms. Bisset, who works as a tutor and school governor, also shared that the police involvement caused her "intense shame" and that she suffered from "emotional fatigue" due to being hyper-vigilant.
During the mitigation, Heseltine's solicitor explained that the friendship, which began in 2022, had rapidly developed from acquaintanceship into a close relationship. They reportedly saw each other regularly, socialized in wine bars, and went hiking together. The complainant also served as a mentor to Heseltine. The solicitor stated that the friendship ended abruptly and, from Heseltine's perspective, for no apparent reason, which she struggled to comprehend. He added that Heseltine sought to "make things better" but faced a "closed door" from Ms. Bisset.
Concerns were also raised about Heseltine allegedly appearing at Ms. Bisset's gym, Unity Gym, where Ms. Bisset was a member. While it was alleged this was an attempt to stalk her, Heseltine's defense argued she was present to consult with a personal trainer she knew there.
Heseltine was fined £1,272 and received a 12-month restraining order. The order prohibits her from contacting Ms. Bisset, entering the street where Ms. Bisset resides, or posting about her former friend or the court case on social media. The court decided against awarding compensation, deeming it inappropriate given that the parties have now severed their relationship.
