Film on Queen Elizabeth's Confidante Angela Kelly May Expose Royal Secrets
A new drama about the late monarch's dresser Angela Kelly could reveal sensitive details about the 'Tiaragate' incident, potentially implicating Prince Harry and Meghan.
A forthcoming film focusing on the life of Queen Elizabeth II's long-time dresser and confidante, Angela Kelly, is generating buzz, with royal experts suggesting it could bring to light previously undisclosed information concerning the Sussexes. The drama, reportedly in development with Fox Searchlight and tentatively titled "Trouble," may delve into Kelly's close relationship with the late monarch and could potentially reignite controversies involving Prince Harry and Meghan.
Kelly, who rose from a working-class background to become the Queen's Personal Assistant and Curator of her wardrobe, is a significant figure in royal circles. Prince Harry himself has identified Kelly in his memoir "Spare" as the individual responsible for a delay in Meghan Markle's access to her wedding tiara ahead of a hair trial, an event colloquially known as 'Tiaragate.'
During an episode of the Daily Mail's "Palace Confidential" program, royal journalists discussed the potential implications of the film. Diary Editor Richard Eden noted that writer Jeremy Brock, known for "Casualty" and "A Very Royal Scandal," may be involved in the script. Eden highlighted that Kelly, who was described by the Queen as being "like a sister," also possessed a combative nature, earning her the nickname "AK-47" among some courtiers.
Eden suggested that the decision to produce a dramatic film rather than a documentary might allow Kelly to participate more comfortably. He also alluded to whispers that the portrayal will be "very accurate" and noted that Kelly had "lively rows" with Harry and Meghan, which the Prince documented in "Spare," calling her a "troublemaker."
Mail on Sunday Editor at Large Charlotte Griffiths commented that Prince Harry should be apprehensive about the film's production, particularly concerning "Tiaragate." Griffiths stated that Kelly reportedly witnessed an additional incident around that time, which the Sussexes are allegedly hoping will not be revealed in the drama.
Royal Editor Rebecca English added that Kelly's significant influence over the Queen was a source of resentment for some within the Royal household. She also mentioned that Kelly felt "very hurt" by the swiftness with which she was asked to leave her royal residence after the Queen's passing at age 96. English described Kelly as being "so intrinsic in the household" that her departure was managed with notable speed, with reports suggesting her access to royal residences was quickly revoked.
Kelly's role extended beyond wardrobe management; she was a trusted advisor who played a part in transforming the Queen's style and provided personal care, such as massaging the Queen's feet. Her forthrightness and possessiveness of her position within the palace were noted by those who worked closely with her.
