Senator John Fetterman, D-Pa., is confronting criticism stemming from leaked text messages that reportedly depict him as neglecting constituent meetings. Fetterman has characterized the reports as "smears" orchestrated by "disgruntled" staff members.

The controversy arose from a report detailing text messages between Fetterman and his staff, which suggested he bypassed meetings with groups such as paralyzed veterans and a children's hospital, and that he declined to attend a funeral for slain police officers due to time constraints. The report, initially published by The Wall Street Journal, has prompted sharp criticism from some within his own party.

However, Fetterman has publicly refuted the allegations. "Per usual — lies, half-truths, innuendos, smears and anonymous," Fetterman stated in a release to CNN. "No matter how many smears or stories, I’m proud to continue to deliver for Pennsylvania."

Amidst the internal party backlash, Fetterman has found an unlikely defender in his Republican colleague from Pennsylvania, Senator Dave McCormick. McCormick took to social media platform X to support Fetterman, stating that "these stories are the latest example of outrageously disloyal staff and forces on the Left using anonymous leaks to cancel my friend John Fetterman."

McCormick added that Fetterman is "an independent thinker who refuses to fall into line so they want to silence him."

Fetterman and McCormick have cultivated a notably bipartisan relationship in a highly partisan Senate. They are one of three Senate pairs from a "purple state" and have previously expressed commitments to each other's political futures. Fetterman has stated he would not oppose McCormick if he seeks re-election in 2030. The two senators also initiated a joint fundraising effort called Common Ground PA in July.

Despite this bipartisan support, some Democratic lawmakers, including Representative Chris Deluzio, D-Pa., have expressed strong disapproval. Deluzio publicly criticized Fetterman's alleged behavior, calling it "pathetic" and stating that "this man has no sense of duty." Deluzio has also indicated a desire for action against Fetterman in the 2028 election.

Meanwhile, other Democrats, including the vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, have reportedly begun laying the groundwork to challenge Fetterman's re-election prospects.
