Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., delivered a surprise video address at the Republican Party's midterm convention Wednesday, offering praise for Republican Sen. Dave McCormick and former President Donald Trump while articulating a rejection of what he termed the Democratic Party's "extremes and socialism."
Speaking from the site of a Pennsylvania steel mill, Fetterman described himself as a "commonsense Democrat" who will "always stand with America." He introduced McCormick, who is seeking re-election to the Senate, as "the kind of senator that gets the job done" and someone who will "fight for Pennsylvania."
Fetterman highlighted his work with McCormick and Trump to defend the state's steel industry, stating, "That’s exactly the kind of thing that we will work together and will work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life right here in the Steel Valley."
The address marks a notable moment as a sitting Democratic senator appeared at the Republican Party's first midterm convention. Fetterman's video also underscores his increasingly independent stance within the Democratic Party, characterized by a willingness to break with party leadership on issues such as Israel, immigration, and military actions.
Fetterman has been an outspoken supporter of Israel in the Senate and has criticized fellow Democrats who advocate for limiting U.S. support for the country. He has also supported stricter immigration enforcement and some Trump administration nominees, positions that have drawn criticism from within his own party. Fetterman has previously stated he would consider leaving the Democratic Party if it became "the anti-Israel party."
Despite their opposing party affiliations, Fetterman and McCormick have developed a close working relationship since their respective campaigns in the 2022 Senate race, when Fetterman defeated Mehmet Oz and McCormick lost the GOP primary. The two senators previously formed a bipartisan joint fundraising committee.
McCormick has emphasized his connection to Pennsylvania's industrial sector and his support for the state's steel workers. Fetterman's video appearance serves to reinforce McCormick's message and present him as a bipartisan collaborator.
While Fetterman's appearance does not signal a party switch, it is likely to fuel further discussion about his political alignment and his ability to maintain support among Democratic voters as he continues to align himself with certain Republican priorities. For Republicans, the appearance offers a high-profile Democratic voice to showcase as they seek to broaden the party's appeal.
