Fernandez Mercau Rejects Transfer Rumors, Commits to NYCFC

Nicolás Fernández Mercau has stated that he made the decision to remain with New York City FC, shutting down speculation about a potential move during the summer transfer window. Despite reports suggesting a mutually agreed-upon transfer between clubs, Fernandez Mercau emphasized that his family and he ultimately decided his future lay with NYCFC.

"I know there was mutually agreed terms between two clubs, but at the end of the day, it’s a decision that I made with my family to stay here," Fernandez Mercau said through a translator. "I’m really happy here. This is where I want to be."

While Fernandez Mercau did not identify the club that reportedly made an offer, it had been previously reported that NYCFC accepted a $25 million transfer bid from Sporting Kansas City before the summer transfer window closed. The 26-year-old midfielder explained that he did not feel it was the right time to move and that his next career goal is to make the Argentina national team.

"Obviously there’s still a lot in my game that I need to grow to get to that level," he said. "But as long as I focus on what I need to do, that would be the next step in my career."

Fernandez Mercau has become a key player for NYCFC this season, currently tied for third in MLS with 15 regular-season goals. His recent goal against Salt Lake City contributed to his team's first regular-season win since July 25.

NYCFC is preparing for the upcoming Hudson River Derby against the Red Bulls. The Red Bulls are currently 10th in the Eastern Conference, just outside playoff contention, while NYCFC holds the eighth spot. A victory would be crucial for both teams as they vie for postseason positioning.

"It’s a derby, it’s emotional, and it means a lot to our fans on both sides," NYCFC head coach Pascal Jansen said. "It’s going to be an intense game no matter what. For us, it’s mainly about making sure we keep a cool head, keep things under control, stick to the plan we make."
