Fernandes Dropped from Manchester United Squad Following Criticism

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been dropped from the starting lineup for Sunday's Premier League match against Bournemouth. This decision follows Fernandes' public criticism of manager Michael Carrick's tactics after the team's Champions League defeat.

Carrick, who had declined to comment on Fernandes' potential omission in his pre-match press conference, stated that the decision was "a football decision" made for the good of the team. "When you have options it's always a difficult decision. We have to make the right one for today and the team to get that performance we want," Carrick told Sky Sports.

Harry Maguire will captain the side, with Mason Mount and Youri Tielemans in midfield roles. This marks only the sixth time Fernandes has been left on the bench for a Premier League game; previous instances were to manage his workload for important European fixtures.

Matheus Cunha and Lisandro Martinez are also among the substitutes. Martinez, who had recently spoken out about the club's hierarchy, was unavailable for the midweek game due to an unspecified injury, with Carrick deeming him not fit enough to risk.

In his program notes for the match, Carrick addressed the team's recent performance, acknowledging the disappointment of the midweek loss. "Manchester United is a truly great football club," he wrote. "Our standards and values have been set out over generations and are very important to me. As a group, we have a duty to represent you in a manner that is befitting of those principles. Wednesday's performance was extremely disappointing in many ways. Today we have to show what we are all about. We all need to stick together but we know that we absolutely have to do better for you. Now, as a group, we need to put in a performance that your support deserves."

Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison commented on BBC Radio 5 Live that while it was a "big call," he believed it was the "right call" given Fernandes' public criticism of the manager. "You can't call out the manager like that tactically," Morrison stated. He added that if the team fails to secure a result, the decision could reflect poorly on Carrick.

European football expert Julien Laurens suggested that Fernandes' comments might have been influenced by broader issues within the club. "It's about boundaries and having to set limits for your own squad so things like that don't happen," Laurens said on BBC Radio 5 Live, referring to the public statements made by senior players.

Jamie Carragher, speaking to Sky Sports, acknowledged Fernandes' status as Manchester United's best player but suggested that Carrick needed to assert his authority. "Even though he's the best player, there will be a lot of people who don't actually like playing with him in the United team," Carragher observed. "He's permanently throwing his arms up at people, he's basically saying, 'you're not good enough to play with me'. That's what we see from Fernandes a lot when things aren't going right for United."
