Detectives in the UK have closed a review into whether fentanyl murderer Luke D'Wit was a serial killer. D'Wit, 37, is currently serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 37 years for the murders of Stephen and Carol Baxter, whom he befriended before poisoning them at their home in West Mersea.

Essex Police had been examining the deaths of D'Wit's father and grandfather following his conviction in 2024. Authorities considered bringing new charges against him, though the specifics of these potential charges remain unclear. "We have consulted with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and at this stage we are not seeking to bring additional prosecutions against Luke D'Wit," a police spokesperson stated.

The review was initiated due to perceived similarities between the deaths of D'Wit's father, Vernon, and the Baxters. All three individuals were found deceased in their armchairs. Investigators reviewed aspects of the killer's past, interviewed individuals acquainted with him, and conducted forensic analyses at his West Mersea residence, where a quantity of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid painkiller, was discovered.

Following consultation with the CPS, the investigation was closed. Authorities determined that the cost of pursuing additional prosecutions was not justified, given the substantial prison sentence D'Wit is already serving for the Baxter murders.
