Feds Surge Law Enforcement to Alaska Amid 'Decoy Dan' Senate Scheme Revelations

Federal law enforcement resources are being significantly increased in Alaska due to what U.S. Attorney Michael Heyman described as "troubling new revelations" in an alleged Democratic scheme to siphon votes in the state's midterm Senate election. The investigation into the "Decoy Dan" plot, which investigators believe aimed to confuse voters and draw support away from incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, has been ongoing for several months.

The intensified federal response comes after a New York Times report detailed the alleged involvement of Democratic Senate hopeful Mary Peltola's campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) in the operation. "As we speak, law enforcement around the country are taking investigative steps with respect to the criminal investigation," Heyman stated at a press conference in Anchorage. He added that several attorneys from his office are now assigned to the matter and that the allegations are being taken "extremely seriously."

The Justice Department previously filed a lawsuit seeking to delay the certification of the Alaska Senate election results, an action Heyman characterized as an effort to preserve ballots rather than influence the outcome. The department plans to request expedited discovery in the case.

According to the New York Times report, former campaign manager for Peltola, Elisa Rios, and other sources indicated that campaign aides were instructed to find individuals named "Dan Sullivan" to run in the election, thereby potentially confusing voters intending to support the incumbent. Rios reportedly stated that Peltola was "definitely aware" of the recruitment effort, although Peltola has publicly stated she was unaware of any candidates other than herself and the incumbent and is not interested in tricking voters.

President Trump has called for Peltola to withdraw from the race and face criminal prosecution. Heyman vowed that "every Alaskan deserves a fair election and they’re going to get one" and warned that those who illegally deceive voters will be held accountable.
