Feds Bust Alleged Migrant Credit Card Fraud Ring in Orange County

Federal agents apprehended Abel Ávila Martínez, a 48-year-old Mexican national, in Orange County, California, on Thursday morning as part of a crackdown on alleged credit card fraud. The arrest was part of a sweep that netted illegal migrants accused of exploiting the U.S. financial system.

Agents utilized drones to track Ávila Martínez from his residence to a vehicle parked a short distance away. He was detained as he entered the car, with law enforcement blocking his escape route. Ávila Martínez, who was previously removed from the U.S. in 1999, is accused of using fraudulent Social Security numbers to apply for credit, accumulating approximately $15,964 in debt. Court documents indicate that his scheme came to light when he filed for bankruptcy and admitted to using a phony Social Security number.

First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli stated that the operation resulted in the arrest of illegal aliens charged with stealing Social Security numbers to obtain credit, incur debt, and then attempt to discharge over $140,000 through bankruptcy. Each of the charged individuals faces a potential sentence of up to 15 years in federal prison. The investigation was reportedly triggered by the suspects' use of fake Social Security numbers.
