The Federal Reserve announced Thursday that venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, economist Raj Chetty, and former Bank of England governor Mervyn King will be among the co-leaders of five new task forces aimed at recommending changes to the central bank's operations.

These task forces were called for by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh last month, who has advocated for significant shifts in the central bank's approach. Warsh has expressed a desire to reduce communication about interest rate policy and decrease the Fed's approximately $6.7 trillion in holdings of government bonds.

“The U.S. economy has changed significantly over the last generation, and never more so than right now,” Warsh stated in a press release. “Each task force will carefully consider whether policymakers’ means and methods, analytical tools and policy approaches can be improved upon.”

Each task force will have three co-leaders and will be supported by Fed staff. The announced leaders represent a mix of public officials and business leaders.

Task Force Focus Areas

One task force will concentrate on the impact of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies on productivity and employment. Andreessen, a prominent investor in AI and cryptocurrency, will co-lead this group. He will be joined by Asha Sharma, an executive vice president at Microsoft and CEO of its Xbox unit, and Charles Jones, an economist at Stanford who is currently on leave with Anthropic.

Economist Raj Chetty, known for his work using large datasets to analyze economic mobility and family fortunes, will co-lead a task force evaluating the data sources utilized by the Fed. Doug McMillon, former president and CEO of Walmart, and Kevin Murphy, an economics professor at the University of Chicago, will also co-lead this data-focused group.

A third task force will examine the Fed's balance sheet, which has expanded considerably since the 2008-2009 Great Recession. This group will be co-led by Raghuram Rajan, former governor of the Reserve Bank of India; Karen Dynan, a Harvard economist and former Treasury official; and Jeremy Stein, a former Fed governor.

Furthermore, a task force on inflation frameworks will be co-led by Greg Mankiw, a prominent economist who served in the George W. Bush administration, and Thomas Sargent, a Nobel laureate from New York University. Mervyn King, the former governor of the Bank of England, will co-lead the task force focused on communications.
