Federal Officials Investigate Fire at Mississippi Police Department

Federal and local authorities are investigating a fire that occurred Saturday morning at the Senatobia Police Department building in Mississippi. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is involved in the investigation, alongside local agencies.

The cause of the fire and whether it was deliberately set remain unclear. Firefighters responded to the Senatobia Police Department at 4:58 a.m. after detecting smoke inside the building. The Senatobia Fire Department stated that crews were able to extinguish the blaze quickly, but details regarding the extent of the damage have not yet been released.

The Senatobia Police Department has been a focal point of community anger in recent months. This discontent escalated in June following an incident where an officer shot and killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley while responding to a shoplifting call at a local Walmart. Wiley, who was a passenger in the vehicle, died after the officer fired into the car. The child's mother and her friend, who were also in the vehicle, were unharmed and unharmed respectively, and they denied any shoplifting had occurred. No charges have been filed against the women.

Further controversy emerged in September when the police chief was terminated. Reports by The New York Times, Mississippi Today, and Verite News revealed allegations of the chief using racist slurs in private text messages. Earlier in February, the officer directly involved in the fatal shooting of Kohen Wiley resigned. The Mississippi Attorney General's office had previously concluded its probe into the incident, clearing the officer of criminal wrongdoing and deeming his use of force justified.

Senatobia is a city located approximately 40 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee.
