A federal judge in California has rejected the Justice Department's request for an emergency order to segregate approximately 20,000 ballots belonging to individuals the Trump administration claimed were "likely" noncitizens. U.S. District Judge David Carter issued the ruling, stating that the federal government's demand was unprecedented.
"Never before in American history has the federal government, on the eve of an election, sought to coerce a state and local government to abandon their own Constitutional elections procedures and bend to the will of the Executive Branch," Judge Carter wrote in his order. The Justice Department had sought this emergency measure as part of its broader efforts concerning voter eligibility.
