Authorities are investigating the deaths of a federal special agent and his wife found shot dead in their Sayreville, New Jersey, home in what officials are calling a murder-suicide. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Kelly Iatauro, 46, was found shot inside the residence on Friday night. Her husband, Christopher Iatauro, 52, was discovered in the backyard with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Christopher Iatauro, who worked as a special agent for the Department of Homeland Security, is suspected of shooting his wife before taking his own life, according to the prosecutor's office. The motive behind the incident remains unclear.
Sayreville police responded to the Glynn Court residence around 8 p.m. Friday. Residents in the immediate vicinity were advised to shelter in place as law enforcement secured the scene, closing a portion of the street for at least 40 minutes. Information regarding the specific sequence of events leading to the deaths is still under investigation.
Kelly Iatauro was remembered by her sister-in-law on social media as a vibrant individual. "Kelly was a bright light- kind, thoughtful, hysterical, inappropriate, and just one of the most amazing people I’ve ever known," she wrote in a tribute posted on Facebook, announcing funeral services. "She left a lasting impression on anyone that was lucky enough to know her."
The Department of Homeland Security had not immediately responded to a request for comment. Records indicate Christopher Iatauro's employment as a special agent were documented between 2019 and 2020. The investigation is ongoing.
