FDA Recalls Miyoko's Plant-Based Butter Over E. coli Contamination Concerns

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of Miyoko's Creamery European Style Salted Plant Milk Butter due to potential contamination with E. coli, mold, and yeast. The recall, initiated by manufacturer Prosperity Organic Foods, Inc., affects over 7,800 units of the plant-based butter sold in 10 states.

The recall was assigned a Class II risk level, indicating that the product could cause "temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences." This action followed notification from Massachusetts-based supermarket chain Market Basket about high yeast levels that did not meet quality standards, according to WGRZ.

The FDA's enforcement report lists yeast, mold, and E. coli as the reasons for the recall. E. coli infections can lead to severe gastrointestinal issues, including diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. In some cases, certain strains of E. coli can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a life-threatening condition that can result in kidney failure. Young children and older adults are considered particularly vulnerable to severe illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The affected product is Miyoko’s Creamery Organic European Style Plant Milk Butter, sold in 3-pound (6-pack, 8-oz units) cases with lot number 1007871 and a best-by date of November 5, 2026. The recall encompasses 1,304 cases, totaling 7,824 individual products.

The ten states where the recalled butter was distributed are Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Wisconsin.

Prosperity Organic Foods Inc., based in Boise, Idaho, voluntarily initiated the recall on September 11, according to the FDA's enforcement report. While no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, consumers are advised not to consume the product. Symptoms of E. coli typically appear three to four days after ingestion and most adults recover within five to seven days.

Miyoko's Creamery is known for its plant-based products, which are typically free of palm oil, lactose, cholesterol, gluten, soy, and GMOs. The company began with plant-based cheeses in 1990 and introduced its European-style cultured butter in 2016.

Consumers who purchased the recalled butter should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. For questions regarding the recall, consumers can contact the FDA at 1-888-463-6332.
