FBI Raids Skid Row, Busting Major Drug Network
Federal agents and local law enforcement targeted drug dealers and their tactics in a large-scale operation aimed at cleaning up Los Angeles' Skid Row.
Federal agents conducted a series of raids targeting a significant criminal network involved in drug trafficking in Los Angeles' Skid Row, culminating in a large-scale operation aimed at dismantling drug sales and distribution in the area. The takedown involved dozens of FBI agents and local police, who conducted multiple raids to apprehend suspected drug dealers.
One raid targeted alleged distributors of fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and PCP. Investigators seized drugs, firearms, and luxury vehicles, arresting numerous individuals. The operation highlighted the deceptive methods employed by dealers, who allegedly used disguises, storefronts, and sidewalk tents to conceal their illicit activities from authorities.
An early morning raid in Pasadena focused on the home of Manuel Vaughns, an alleged cocaine dealer. Agents utilized flash-bang grenades and tactical maneuvers to secure the property. Neighbors reportedly expressed unawareness of criminal activity at the residence, noting only the presence of vehicles being worked on.
Authorities identified several other alleged dealers targeted in the operation, including Rodney Thomas, Charles McIntyre, Dwayne Richards, Larry Pitre, Malcolm Dehughes, Lionel Nelson, Irigia Bowman, and Kevin Fountain. These operations were described as a significant blow against the illicit drug trade that contributes to crime and addiction in Skid Row.
Prior to the sweep, federal agents, the DEA, and the LAPD engaged in extensive investigations, utilizing wiretaps, undercover officers, and drones to gather evidence against key drug dealers and suppliers operating in Skid Row. The identified dealers reportedly employed a range of tactics, from selling drugs from vehicles to posing as homeless individuals living in tents that served as drug dens. Some allegedly used storefronts or posed as social workers and homeless service providers, while others used Single Room Occupancy (SRO) units and low-income housing to store drugs.
Skid Row, a 50-block area in downtown Los Angeles, is home to an estimated 6,000 homeless individuals and is characterized by warehouses, businesses, and low-budget establishments. The area has long been a focal point for crime and social issues, with authorities facing persistent challenges in addressing its problems.
The operation saw a large convoy of approximately 100 law enforcement vehicles descend on the area, with officers cordoning off blocks and parks identified as drug hotspots. Authorities reported serving 44 search warrants and taking at least 14 suspects into custody by 9 a.m. on the day of the operation.
