FBI agents executed search warrants at the Washington, D.C. home of former Congressman Eric Swalwell on Sunday as part of an escalating federal criminal investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against him. The raid followed a confrontation with agents at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday, where Swalwell's electronic devices, including his cellphone, were seized.
Exclusive video footage obtained by the Daily Mail showed over half a dozen FBI agents arriving at Swalwell's Northeast D.C. property in unmarked vehicles. Agents were observed entering the home and removing what sources described as "undisclosed potential evidence." Some agents were in plainclothes, while others wore FBI-marked shirts.
Sources indicated that neither Swalwell nor his wife, Brittany Watts, were present at the residence during the Sunday raid. The search warrant, reportedly filed on August 13, was under a federal statute (Section 242 of Title 18) related to officials abusing their authority, though its specific application to Swalwell's case remains unclear.
On Saturday, agents confronted Swalwell with a search warrant upon his arrival at San Francisco Airport. His MacBook Pro, charging cable, and wall charger were among the items seized. Swalwell reportedly cooperated with the agents.
The Department of Justice launched its investigation into the former congressman in April. Swalwell, 45, faces multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. At least four women have come forward with claims, including a former staffer who alleged she was raped by the married politician on two occasions in 2019 and 2024 when she was too intoxicated to consent. Another woman alleged he drugged and raped her in 2018, and two women stated he sent them unsolicited pictures of his penis.
Swalwell has vehemently denied all allegations. These accusations contributed to him dropping out of the California governor's race and prompted his resignation from Congress. He has largely maintained a low profile since.
Recently declassified records also brought renewed attention to Swalwell's past association with Christine Fang, a Chinese national known as "Fang Fang." The documents revealed Swalwell admitted to the FBI that he "occasionally hooked up" with Fang, who had previously been involved in fundraising for his 2014 re-election campaign and placed an intern in his congressional office. Swalwell has not been accused of wrongdoing in connection with the Fang Fang matter.
While rejecting the sexual misconduct claims, Swalwell has acknowledged making "mistakes in judgment" and has apologized to his wife. The Daily Mail has reached out to Eric Swalwell for comment. The Department of Justice and the FBI declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
