The FBI is investigating leftist groups in Utah to determine whether they had any connection to the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, a source familiar with the inquiry told Fox News Digital.
Kirk was shot Sept. 10 while speaking at an event hosted by Turning Point USA at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later died, authorities said. Twenty-two-year-old Tyler Robinson has been identified as a suspect in the killing.
The source told Fox News Digital the FBI is trying to determine whether any leftist groups in the state knew about the alleged shooter’s plans in advance or provided assistance. The source did not identify which groups, and Fox News cited Axios as the outlet that first reported the development.
Law enforcement officials say Robinson was taken into custody after his father recognized him in surveillance footage that the FBI released and turned him in, according to earlier reporting by Fox News. A law enforcement source previously said the suspect was apprehended in St. George, Utah.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, a Republican, said on ABC’s "This Week" that Robinson is not cooperating with investigators. "He has not confessed to authorities. He is not cooperating, but all the people around him are cooperating. And I think that's very important," Cox said.
The Utah County Sheriff's Department said Robinson is being held under "special watch" while a mental health evaluation is completed. The department said that until he clears that evaluation, officials are keeping a close eye on him and that he will undergo the standard classification process used to determine housing once cleared. "He will continue to be monitored by mental, medical, and custody staff throughout the duration of his stay," the department said in a statement.
Officials have released limited details as the investigation continues. Authorities have not announced formal charges in connection with the shooting. The Fox News source and law enforcement have not disclosed whether the FBI has developed evidence linking any specific organizations to the suspect or his actions.
Investigators are also reviewing surveillance and other materials gathered at the scene and continue to coordinate across local and federal agencies. The Fox News source provided the information about the probe; Axios first reported the bureau’s review of leftist groups in Utah. Further updates are expected as the mental health evaluation and standard investigative steps proceed.
