The FBI said Monday it is investigating whether an “extended network” may have aided Tyler Robinson, the suspect accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, as federal agents pursue digital and in-person leads into the shooting and the suspect’s contacts.

Kirk, 31, the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot once in the neck during a Sept. 10 campus event and died. Authorities arrested 22-year-old Robinson about 33 hours later. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino told Fox News the bureau is examining whether Robinson was “aided and abetted” by others and whether people in his circle had advance knowledge of the alleged plot.

Bongino said investigators are looking broadly at whether the killing was “part of a larger effort,” including whether someone in the crowd at the Utah Valley University event assisted Robinson, or whether there was financial or other support provided by acquaintances. He said the FBI will issue subpoenas as part of the effort to trace any extended network.

Officials have said Robinson expressed an obsession with Kirk in online activity, and FBI Director Christopher Wray (note: director name as reported) and other senior agency officials described the attack as ideologically motivated. Director Kirit S. Patel told Fox that Robinson exchanged text messages in which he wrote that he had an opportunity to “take out Charlie Kirk” because of hatred for what Kirk represented, and that a handwritten note allegedly containing a similar statement was later destroyed, though the bureau said it still had evidence of the note’s contents.

Investigators have pointed to multiple warning signs in Robinson’s behavior and communications before the shooting. Law enforcement sources have said they are probing whether online communities and acquaintances had advance knowledge of Robinson’s alleged plans. Reporting has focused on groups and platforms that included pro-trans forums, members of the furry community, and online gaming networks such as Steam. One local group identified in reporting, Armed Queers SLC, removed its Instagram page after the shooting.

Forensic details have also drawn scrutiny. Authorities reported inscriptions on unspent shell casings from the gun used that suggested affiliations with pro-trans and anti-fascist ideologies, according to law enforcement comments cited by media outlets. Officials have said Robinson lived with a partner who is in the process of transitioning; state and federal officials have declined to assign a single motive while the probe continues.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Friday that Robinson appeared to have been “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology,” though officials have not released a definitive political registration or single motive for the attack. The FBI has described Robinson as becoming more political in recent months, based on what agents have called his digital footprint and statements from friends and relatives.

The bureau has not said it has found co-conspirators, and investigators emphasized that their review includes the full range of possible assistance — from someone in Robinson’s immediate social circle failing to report knowledge of a plot to active help procuring a weapon or planning logistics. The agency also is examining the timing of the shooting in relation to a question Kirk answered at the event about shootings committed by transgender people; Bongino said investigators were examining whether that exchange had any connection to the timing but added it was not yet possible to draw a conclusion.

Campus and local law enforcement have cooperated with the FBI since the shooting, and federal agents have said they will continue to use grand-jury subpoenas and other legal tools to pursue records, communications and financial information connected to Robinson and to people in his network. The FBI has declined to provide additional details about some evidence, including the handwritten note, when asked by media outlets.

Kirk was a prominent figure in conservative activism, known for founding Turning Point USA and for frequent public appearances at college campuses. His killing has prompted a wide-ranging investigation that federal officials describe as ongoing and evolving as new leads emerge. Authorities have urged anyone with information about Robinson’s contacts or statements leading up to the shooting to come forward.

Media reports about the probe have ranged across online communities, personal acquaintances and forensic traces. Local and federal investigators said they are reviewing digital communications, social media, in-person contacts and financial records to determine whether Robinson acted alone or with help. The FBI has said it is leaving “no stone unturned,” and that its subpoenas and investigative steps will continue as it seeks to establish the full chain of events that led to Kirk’s assassination.

As the investigation proceeds, federal authorities have reiterated that they have not publicly accused any organization or group of conspiring in the killing. Criminal charges and potential additional arrests, if any, will depend on what investigators can prove about material assistance or prior knowledge by others. The FBI and local prosecutors said they will release further information when appropriate and as the integrity of the investigation permits.
