FBI, Dutch Authorities Arrest Alleged Leader of Global Hacking Syndicate
A 24-year-old Amsterdam man was apprehended in connection with the ShinyHunters network, linked to cyberattacks worldwide.
Federal authorities announced the arrest of an alleged leader of the global hacking syndicate ShinyHunters in the Netherlands. The operation, a joint effort between the FBI and Dutch National Police, targeted a cybercrime network implicated in numerous high-profile attacks across the U.S. and internationally.
Dutch police confirmed the Sept. 15 apprehension of a 24-year-old Amsterdam resident. The suspect is accused of involvement with the ShinyHunters group and faces additional charges for allegedly attempting to incite two murders. Authorities stated that the investigation remains ongoing, with further arrests possible as electronic devices seized from the suspect are examined.
"This morning @FBI and our partners the Dutch National Police are announcing the arrest of one of the alleged leaders of ShinyHunters – a global cybercrime and threat actor group linked to cyberattacks in the United States, the Netherlands, and around the world," FBI Director Kash Patel stated on social media.
In coordination with FBI investigators, the Dutch High-Tech Crime Unit made the arrest under Dutch law. FBI teams are currently working with international partners to pursue additional leads stemming from this development. The FBI acknowledged the contributions of its Dutch National Police partners and industry collaborators who provided crucial information.
According to a Dutch police release, "Various data carriers have been seized and are being investigated further. Further arrests are not ruled out."
