FBI Director Patel Faces Heated Senate Hearing with Accusations of Drunkenness, Questionable Hiring Standards
Democrats on the Judiciary Committee launched sharp attacks on Kash Patel, questioning his personal conduct and the FBI's recruitment policies.
Senate Democrats on the Judiciary Committee subjected FBI Director Kash Patel to intense scrutiny during a hearing, challenging him on accusations of excessive drinking, questionable hiring practices, and what they termed "frat boy goals."
Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) directly accused Patel of being "so drunk that briefings have been rescheduled so you could sleep it off," and challenged him to take an alcohol test. Patel has previously filed a defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic over reports detailing his alleged drinking habits. Footage of Patel drinking with the U.S. men's Olympic hockey team also emerged during the exchange.
Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) criticized Patel's demeanor, comparing him to an "18-year-old kid who wants to join a fraternity" and labeling him an "embarrassment" and a "disgrace." Booker also accused Patel of using FBI resources to intimidate journalists and stonewalling the committee.
An exchange regarding the FBI's background check standards became particularly contentious when ranking member Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) questioned Patel about the bureau's revised policies. Durbin pressed Patel on whether the FBI had "dropped automatic disqualification for applicants who have engaged in bestiality," to which Patel responded that such applicants were likely victims themselves, citing cases involving human traffickers.
Despite the barrage of accusations, Patel attempted to shift the focus to the FBI's successes in crime reduction. He presented statistics indicating significant increases in arrests for various crimes, including violent offenses and child exploitation, over the preceding 18 months. Patel also highlighted the recent apprehension of an individual in Pittsburgh accused of planning an ISIS-inspired attack.
Patel's girlfriend, Alexis Wilkins, was present during the hearing. While Patel largely maintained composure, some exchanges reportedly drew his ire. The hearing also saw Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the committee chairman, express frustration with the extended remarks of Democratic senators, at one point telling Sen. Booker to "shut up."
