FBI arrests suspect tied to ShinyHunters hack of bureau's jobs portal
The arrest is the latest action in a global investigation into the breach, which compromised personal data of nearly all FBI employees.
The FBI has arrested an accused co-conspirator of the hacking group ShinyHunters, which claimed responsibility for breaching the bureau's jobs portal and obtaining sensitive personal data on nearly all employees, FBI Director Kash Patel announced.
The arrest marks the latest development in a global investigation into the breach, which Patel stated occurred on a platform managed by a third-party vendor. "We will continue to work closely with our partners to disrupt what’s left of the ShinyHunters group and their associates, no matter where they operate," Patel said in a statement.
The identity of the arrested individual and any charges they may face were not immediately disclosed. ShinyHunters had previously claimed responsibility for the hack in a message that cited false allegations in a May FBI public advisory. This advisory had described the group as a cybercriminal organization specializing in large-scale data breaches and extortion, and noted that they often use claims of access to sensitive information to prompt payment from victims.
Experts have noted that while the compromised data was of a type typically accessed in data breaches, the hack carried significant national security implications. The breach could potentially expose FBI agents and their families to extortion, swatting, and other forms of harassment, particularly given that the personal data of agents' spouses was also reportedly obtained.
