Newly released private diary entries from Dr. Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), reveal he privately grappled with the origins of COVID-19 and the efficacy of public health measures, according to documents released by Sen. Rand Paul.

The documents, described by Paul as Fauci's "daily historical account," contain entries from the early stages of the pandemic. On January 31, 2020, Fauci privately noted that scientists considered the possibility of the virus's deliberate insertion, a scenario that required further expert review. This private reflection contrasts with public statements made around the same time.

Fauci's entries also appear to indicate private doubts about the effectiveness of masks and admitted failures in testing and supply chains. He reportedly questioned the competence of the CDC and FDA, and privately acknowledged that officials had overstated the ineffectiveness of masks.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., has condemned Fauci, labeling him a "megalomaniac" and "infamous villain." Johnson alleges Fauci knowingly funded gain-of-function research, contradicted himself on COVID-19's origin, prioritized experimental vaccines over early treatments, and oversaw detrimental lockdown policies. Johnson is calling for "full accountability."

Paul, who has had contentious exchanges with Fauci during congressional hearings, stated that many of the diary entries "completely undermine the official narrative" promoted by Fauci and other public health officials. He suggested that Fauci also reveled in media attention while demonizing critics.

The documents were released as part of ongoing scrutiny into the pandemic response and the origins of the virus. Fauci served as a prominent government spokesperson and infectious disease expert throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
