Dr. Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during a contentious Senate hearing Wednesday, refusing to answer numerous questions, including those posed by Senator Rand Paul regarding Bill Gates' security clearance and involvement with China.
During the hearing before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Paul revealed that Bill Gates was granted a Q security clearance from 2014 to 2021. This clearance, functionally equivalent to a Top Secret clearance, was reportedly granted due to Gates' involvement with TerraPower, a company engaged in nuclear innovation.

Earlier in the hearing, Senator Rick Scott questioned Fauci about his potential partnerships with Bill Gates on global health initiatives or vaccines, and whether he had knowledge of Gates collaborating with China on sensitive research. Fauci declined to answer these questions.
Scott further pressed Fauci, inquiring about his involvement in classified government programs, the use of research such as gain of function, and whether he maintained an active national security clearance. Fauci provided no responses to these inquiries.
Fauci, who served as a medical advisor to several presidents, cited his Fifth Amendment rights on more than 100 occasions throughout the hearing. His attorney, David Schertler, was escorted out by security after attempting to speak on his client's behalf, which Paul deemed inappropriate given Fauci's invocation of the Fifth.
Fauci, in his opening statement, accused Paul of an "unhinged obsession" with him and suggested the hearing was motivated by Paul's desire to see him prosecuted. Paul countered that a witness pleading the Fifth cannot have their lawyer testify on their behalf.

Senator Josh Hawley raised questions about Fauci allegedly using federal staff and resources to solicit awards recognizing his work during the pandemic. Fauci also invoked the Fifth Amendment in response to these accusations. Hawley argued that a previous pardon should negate Fauci's Fifth Amendment protection, citing legal precedent, though scholars are divided on this interpretation.
Fauci and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have had ties for over two decades. Fauci served on a scientific advisory board that received funding from the foundation starting in 2003, and in 2010, he became involved in an initiative backed by the foundation and the World Health Organization to develop a Global Vaccine Action Plan. Gates has stated that he and Fauci remained in frequent contact throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Personal diaries belonging to Fauci, released recently, reportedly detail his interactions with celebrities during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fauci achieved significant public recognition during the pandemic, a fact that was a recurring theme during Wednesday's hearing.
