Father Who Stopped Oregon School Shooter Feels Guilt Over Unsaved Victims

A father of two, Kaylub Giamanco, intervened and stopped a 16-year-old gunman at Silver Rail Elementary School in Oregon on Thursday after hearing shots fired while driving past the building. Giamanco, 36, was on his way home for lunch when the gunfire erupted.

His brother, Kyle, told NBC News that Giamanco, a carpenter, entered the school and confronted the shooter in a special education room. Giamanco, who legally carries a concealed weapon, was able to stop the assailant. However, Giamanco does not view himself as a hero. His brother stated that Giamanco is haunted by the events and feels a sense of guilt for not being able to save all four victims who were killed in the attack.

The Giamanco family also has a personal connection to the tragedy, as they are friends with a 7-year-old student who was injured. The child, who uses a wheelchair, sustained a gunshot wound to the face and is recovering from surgery.
