A father fatally shot his wife and six children before setting their Michigan home on fire, killing the family's pets in the blaze, authorities reported.
Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, is accused of killing his wife, Amanda, 39, and their six children, who ranged in age from five to 15, inside their Grand Haven Township residence. Investigators found the bodies of the couple in their bedroom and the children in their respective bedrooms.
Following the shootings, Karolkiewicz is believed to have started several fires within the $750,000 home before taking his own life. His death has been ruled a suicide, while his wife and children's deaths are classified as homicides.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office also confirmed the discovery of at least three dogs and one cat deceased in the home, likely succumbing to smoke or fire-related injuries. Authorities indicated that additional animals may have also perished in the fire.
Investigators are canvassing the neighborhood for surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses, family members, and friends in an effort to reconstruct the family's final hours and establish a motive. The exact cause of the fires is still under investigation, with Michigan State Police arson investigators examining the scene.
Reports indicate that Kristopher Karolkiewicz had lost his job as Vice President of Sales and Marketing with the American Heart Association earlier in the month. He had been employed by the organization since September 2023.
Information from a previous affair also surfaced, with Amanda Karolkiewicz reportedly detailing infidelity by her husband six years prior. She had described the affair in online posts and sought to mend the marriage, though it appears the past infidelity continued to affect her. The couple married in 2009, and of the six children, four were Kristopher's biological children, and two were adopted. The children's names have not been released, but they included four boys aged 15, 12, 11, and five, and two 11-year-old daughters.
Emergency dispatch audio revealed that fire crews were initially alerted to white smoke emanating from the property. A dispatcher noted, "We're given a 10-7 for a residential fire at 14936 Riverside Trail. White smoke coming out of the window."
