Sergio Hill, 32, was killed on July 10 in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles when the Toyota Camry he was driving was broadsided by a BMW SUV. Hill was en route to meet his newborn child for the first time at the time of the crash.
Also killed in the collision was Hill's friend, Alvaro 'Tito' Castillo Jr., 35, who was a passenger in the vehicle. Castillo's young daughter, also a passenger, was critically injured and transported to a local hospital. The driver of the BMW was also injured and evaluated at the scene, but their identity and condition are unknown.
Witnesses reported that the BMW was racing with a Tesla moments before the crash. Ken Smith, owner of a nearby mini-mart, told KTLA News that he heard the vehicles speeding by and then a loud impact. Smith provided surveillance footage that appears to show the two vehicles traveling at high speed on Crenshaw Boulevard shortly before the collision.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be factors in the crash. The unidentified BMW driver was given a sobriety test and released. A police spokesperson stated that while there is no indication of a crime at this time and the incident appears to be a traffic accident, it remains under investigation.
Sergio Hill leaves behind two sons and two daughters. Alvaro Castillo Jr. is survived by two daughters. A GoFundMe tribute described Hill as a hardworking individual with a generous spirit who cherished his family and friends.
