Father and Toddler Injured in 80-Foot Fall in Utah's Virgin River Gorge

A father and his one-year-old toddler sustained injuries after falling approximately 80 feet while rappelling in Utah's Virgin River Gorge.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Saturday in the Cedar Pocket area, a remote location near the Ghost Valley Trailhead. The father and child were rappelling together when the accident happened.

Emergency services, including Washington County Search and Rescue, Mohave County Sheriff's Office, and Washington County Sheriff’s Office, were dispatched to the scene. A helicopter was initially requested for an aerial assessment, but rescue crews determined the terrain was too hazardous for landing.

Fire Department Captain Larry Lydon described the rescue as "challenging." Responders worked for about three hours to extricate the two injured individuals from the remote canyon. Sarah Miller, a rescue official, was deployed to stabilize the father before he could be hoisted out using a rescue basket and rope team. The father sustained serious injuries and remains in critical condition. The toddler, who was not injured in the fall itself, was attended to by medics before being transported to Intermountain Health St George Regional Hospital.

The father's partner, the mother of the toddler, reportedly suffered a hand injury while managing the rope during the accident.

The Virgin River Gorge, situated along Interstate 15 between St. George, Utah, and Mesquite, Nevada, is a popular area for rock climbers and canyon explorers. The Bureau of Land Management notes the gorge is significantly steep, with an average drop of 70 feet per mile.

Following the incident, the Beaver Dam-Littlefield Fire Department issued a warning to outdoor enthusiasts, urging them to exercise extreme caution in remote areas and to carefully consider the risks associated with activities like rappelling. The department emphasized the importance of safety precautions during recreational activities.
