Father and Son Found Dead Weeks Apart at Rural Property; Man Arrested

Police have arrested a hospitalised man in connection with the suspicious deaths of a father and son whose bodies were discovered at a rural property in northern New South Wales, Australia, more than two weeks apart.

Officers were first called to a home on Summerland Way in Gurranang, approximately 25 kilometers north of Grafton, on September 13, after the body of a 79-year-old man was found inside.

Authorities returned to the property on Monday afternoon for a follow-up investigation and discovered the body of the 79-year-old man's 59-year-old son in a shed. The son was reportedly visiting the property to handle his father's belongings.

"They did not anticipate what they found," Superintendent Joanne Schultz stated, describing the crime scenes as "confronting."

Investigators established Strike Force Faneel and took a 32-year-old man, believed to be a resident of Gurranang, into custody at Grafton Base Hospital on Tuesday. He is assisting police with their inquiries, but no charges have been laid.

The 59-year-old son is believed to have suffered multiple stab wounds and was not a resident of Gurranang. Police indicated his death occurred within the last 24 to 48 hours prior to his discovery on Monday.

"There's quite a lot of work to be done in terms of identifying exactly what has taken place, but the injuries are consistent with foul play," Superintendent Schultz said. "We've yet to establish the relationship with the 32-year-old male."

Superintendent Schultz added, "Both clearly traumatic scenes and particularly for those officers that arrived on the scene yesterday and were not expecting to locate the 59-year-old male in the situation he was deceased."
