A father and son have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of two U.S. Forest Service employees in a remote area of Northern California's Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The incident concluded with the safe recovery of the two workers.
Joseph Charles Hendrickson and his son, Phoenix, were taken into custody after allegedly holding the Forest Service employees at gunpoint inside a trailer near Gumboot Lake in Siskiyou County. The area was temporarily closed off during the law enforcement response.
The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office received a call around 10 a.m. on Friday, reporting that Hendrickson possessed firearms and wished to speak with the FBI. Authorities stated that the suspects had no prior history with local law enforcement.
An hours-long operation involving local, state, and federal agencies culminated in the hostages being freed unharmed. An FBI hostage rescue team from Quantico, Virginia, was deployed to assist in the situation. Officials noted the dynamic nature of such events, emphasizing the need for specialized resources to ensure safety.
Federal prosecutors announced the arrests on Friday. The identities of the Forest Service employees were not released by authorities.
