Father and Daughter Killed in UTV Rollover After Family Lunch

A father and his teenage daughter were killed Friday afternoon in a UTV rollover crash in rural Minnesota, authorities said. Jacob Jeurissen, 48, and his 18-year-old daughter, Kiara, were traveling home from a family lunch when the side-by-side vehicle they were in overturned and rolled multiple times.

The Aitkin County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident, which occurred around 2:30 p.m. in Macville Township. Officials indicated that speed may have been a contributing factor, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

Relatives who were following the pair witnessed the aftermath of the crash and called 911. Both Jacob and Kiara sustained fatal head injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Amanda Jeurissen, Jacob's wife and Kiara's mother, is now facing the loss of both her husband and daughter. A GoFundMe fundraiser has been established to support the family as they navigate the emotional and practical burdens of their loss.

Off-road vehicle accidents, including those involving ATVs and UTVs, are a significant concern across the United States. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, these vehicles are associated with an average of over 800 deaths and an estimated 100,000 emergency department-treated injuries annually. Rollover incidents can be particularly dangerous, potentially leading to occupant ejection or crushing injuries.

Minnesota has also seen a number of off-road vehicle casualties. A report from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources indicated 30 deaths and 246 injuries across 253 ATV and off-highway motorcycle accidents in the state as of November 5, 2024. Safety officials consistently advise riders to wear protective gear, receive proper training, adhere to passenger limits, and adjust speed based on terrain and conditions.
