Fatalities and Injuries Reported at Canadian Military Base After Fire

Fatalities and injuries have been reported following a significant incident that ignited a large fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, a major Canadian Army training installation. Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed the casualties on Saturday, though he did not immediately specify the exact number of people killed or injured.

"I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base," McGuinty told reporters. He also noted that the fire was still burning Saturday evening and stated, "I cannot recall an incident like this in recent memory."

The municipality of Wainwright reported that the fire had spread beyond the military base's perimeter into the surrounding area. However, local officials stated that no evacuation orders had been issued.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the incident on social media, writing, "A serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright, in Alberta. Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected." Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also described the event as a "significant and tragic fire" affecting military personnel.

The Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and local emergency personnel were on the scene responding to the incident. The Department of National Defence, public safety officials, and provincial and municipal governments were working to mobilize support.

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is situated approximately 130 miles east of Edmonton. According to 2021 census figures, the base had about 1,310 military and civilian personnel. The nearby town of Wainwright has a population of approximately 6,600.

The cause of the incident remains unclear.
