Fashion Editor Reimagines Wardrobe With High Street Brands
Initially drawn to luxury labels, a fashion journalist discovers stylish and flattering options from accessible British retailers.
Rosie Green, Assistant Editor (Beauty) at the Daily Mail, typically gravitates towards designer clothing, a preference rooted in past insecurities rather than snobbery. Growing up in Birmingham and aiming to fit into the fashion magazine world, she believed designer pieces would shield her from criticism. While she could not afford these items outright, her position at a fashion magazine allowed her access through gifts and discounts.
Currently facing a "clothing paralysis" due to lingering fears about high street shopping and the prohibitive cost of luxury brands like Chloé and Celine, Green accepted an intervention from the YOU fashion team. This challenge aimed to introduce her to the offerings available from more accessible retailers.
The exploration yielded surprising and delightful results. Green found a cashmere jumper from John Lewis to be soft and stylish, and boots from Next to be flattering. Even faux leather shorts from Very fit well. She noted her shock at the prices, particularly a £750 Cos cashmere jacket, which she contrasted with what she used to pay for discounted designer wear in the 1990s. The fashion team's reactions indicated a need for her to update her style expectations.
Key Finds
One standout piece was a slip-style dress from John Lewis (£149). Its heavier fabric and cut were found to be more flattering for an older figure, making it a versatile desk-to-dinner option. The dress could be styled for the office with a jumper and flats or for an evening out with heels and a cardigan.
Green also discovered a funnel-neck jacket from Cos (£749), which she described as having the pared-back elegance of a luxury brand. While not inexpensive, its price was significantly less than a designer equivalent. Paired with shorts from Very (£35) and shoes from Next (£42), this ensemble allowed her to experiment with new trends without a significant financial risk.
A denim dress from Aligne (£169), described as being at the upper end of the high street, offered a polished feel due to its considered fit and quality fabric. Green considered it a potential wardrobe workhorse. Complementing the dress were knee-high leather boots from Next (£99), which were noted for their style and availability up to a size 43.
