Men's holiday attire frequently features items that are widely disliked by women, according to fashion editor Hannah Skelley. In an advisory for summer travel, Skelley identifies several fashion choices that should be avoided, offering alternatives to ensure a more stylish appearance.

Swimwear Choices

Skelley strongly advises against wearing "budgie smugglers" or extremely brief swim briefs unless one is a professional swimmer or diver, deeming them "cringeworthy" for the average adult. Instead, she recommends opting for swimming trunks. Brands like Joules, Massimo Dutti, Arket, and Orlebar Brown are suggested for their swimwear.

Shorts Length and Fit

The debate over shorts length is addressed, with Skelley cautioning against excessively short, "loin-skimming" styles that reveal too much thigh. She points to a public instance where the "new prime minister, Andy Burnham," was photographed in such shorts while running, a choice that reportedly drew negative attention. While rugby players and individuals resembling Harry Styles might suit shorter styles, Skelley suggests that "average Joes" should avoid them. Conversely, very long, shin-length Bermuda shorts are deemed suitable only for taller individuals, generally six feet and above. The recommended length for most men is from mid-thigh to just above the knee. The fit should allow for two fingers to slide under the hem, avoiding styles that are too loose or too tight to prevent unwanted exposure or discomfort.

Aloha Shirts and Prints

"Hawaiian shirts," particularly those with loud, "Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura"-style patterns, are discouraged unless the wearer is from Hawaii or of Polynesian descent. Skelley suggests that a loose-fitting linen or cotton shirt is a more appropriate choice. While prints are acceptable, garish designs should be avoided. Embroidery is offered as a more tasteful alternative. Brands such as Bound and Percival, and Paul Smith are recommended for these styles.

Footwear and Socks

A "red card" is given to the combination of socks with open-toed shoes, regardless of toe appearance. Skelley suggests pedicures or podiatrist visits for those concerned about their feet. Socks are deemed acceptable with loafers, trainers, slide-ons, and Birkenstocks, but only with closed-toe footwear. For sandals, supportive, practical hiking styles are noted as being popular due to the "gorp-core" trend. Teva's walking sandals and Uneek's sporty sandal-sneakers are mentioned. Leather or suede fisherman's sandals are also suggested as alternatives to flip-flops for extended walking. Birkenstock Boston clogs in suede or leather are presented as a more trendy option compared to the classic Arizonas.

Socks with closed-toe shoes, such as Boston clogs or loafers, are acceptable in the evening, provided they are plain white crew styles or have minimal sporting stripes. Loudly colored or slogan-emblazoned socks are discouraged.

Grooming Recommendations

Pre-holiday grooming advice includes daily moisturizing to keep skin supple, with Aveeno's scent-free option recommended. For exfoliation, Aesop's body scrub is suggested. Sun protection is emphasized, particularly for the face, with moisturizers containing SPF. Simple's Kind to Skin cream with Factor 50 is cited as an affordable, scentless option. For beards or bald heads, Horace's face and body sunscreen is recommended. For body application, E45's spray is noted for ease of reapplication. The importance of foot care is reiterated, with pedicures recommended. The Margaret Dabbs Medical Pedicure is highlighted for those needing significant foot overhauls. For body hair management, the Philips "Body & Balls Groomer 5000" is mentioned as a tool for trimming without necessarily achieving complete baldness.
