Fashion Couple Found Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide After Husband's Financial Ruin
The brother of fashion executive Michelle Min claims her husband, Bryan Walker, lost over $100 million in risky investments, triggering a mental collapse that led to the couple's deaths.
A prominent fashion executive and his wife were found dead in what authorities are investigating as a murder-suicide, following the husband's alleged financial ruin and mental breakdown, according to reports.
Michelle Min's brother, Paul Min, told The California Post that Bryan Walker, CEO of the women's fashion company Bryn Walker, suffered extensive mental anguish in the months leading up to their deaths. Paul Min claims Walker made a series of risky financial decisions, including gambling on options and leveraged positions, which resulted in losses exceeding $100 million by mid-September.
Walker's alleged financial losses sent him into a deep depression, during which he became withdrawn and unresponsive. "He just curled up into a ball, and he was just sobbing like a baby for weeks on end. He was just completely useless," Paul Min recounted.
Despite the devastating financial situation, Michelle Min was reportedly determined to help her husband recover. Her family stated she cared for him closely, attempting to ease his mental distress. She even hired an accountant from Chicago, who reportedly informed them their financial situation was not as dire as they believed. However, Paul Min indicated that by this point, Walker "had basically gone insane."
Plans were being made to institutionalize Walker due to his deteriorating mental state. On Friday morning, the day he was scheduled to be admitted, he reportedly texted a neighbor to call 911. Before help could arrive, shots were heard from the couple's home in the hills near UC Berkeley.
Oakland police found Walker and Min dead on a terrace attached to their home. Investigators recovered one firearm at the scene. Surveillance video reportedly captured the sequence of events, with the first gunshot heard around 10:43 a.m., followed by sounds of distress, and then a second gunshot, after which the scene became silent.
A note found at the scene reportedly contained passcodes to Walker's and Michelle's phones, suggesting premeditation. Paul Min believes Walker shot his wife because he learned he was going to be institutionalized and had previously resisted mental health interventions.
"My sister was utterly devoted to Brian to the very end, and he shot her," Paul Min said, adding that Michelle Min had blamed herself for not recognizing her husband's crisis sooner. "She didn't say anything harsh to him. She just said, 'Brian, you've been sick. It's my fault, I should have known better. I should have known you were in a crisis.'"
Paul Min stated that he intends to run the fashion company, and the family is working to manage the financial aftermath of Walker's decisions. The couple had been married for over 30 years. Michelle Min is survived by her brother Paul and her sister Alexandra.
