Fashion Council CEO Resigns After Restraining PETA Protesters

Steven Kolb, the longtime chief executive of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), announced his resignation Friday, marking the end of a two-decade tenure. The departure follows an incident during New York Fashion Week where Kolb was filmed physically restraining two People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) protesters.

Kolb's resignation was announced in a statement expressing pride in his accomplishments and a belief that it was the right time for a new chapter. The CFDA, the industry's primary trade organization, acknowledged his decision and expressed gratitude for his leadership.

The incident occurred Sunday at a runway show for Cos, a brand owned by H&M. Kolb was seen intervening as protesters disrupted the show, reportedly calling out slogans about the use of wool. In video footage, Kolb is seen covering a protester's mouth and restraining her with his arms and leg. He also pushed another protester and covered their mouth.

PETA had initially planned to file a police report against Kolb, but later decided against it after consulting attorneys. The animal rights group stated that they still intend to meet with Kolb and hope for "meaningful steps to stop this epidemic of cruelty to animals."

Kolb had previously apologized for his actions and had announced he was taking a leave of absence pending an investigation. Despite the recent incident, PETA has acknowledged Kolb's past efforts in helping to ban fur from CFDA runway show schedules.

The CFDA described Kolb as a "dedicated leader and tireless champion of American fashion."
