Farmer Thwarts Alleged Terror Plot Near US Air Base in UK
A civilian's quick thinking and suspicious observation led to the arrest of five men near RAF Fairford, a key US Air Force installation.
A farmer is being hailed as a hero after her suspicions about three white vans and their occupants led to the arrest of five men near RAF Fairford, a significant airbase used by the United States Air Force. The incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday in the quiet Cotswolds village of Whelford.
The woman, who has not been named, reported seeing the vans blocking a road and noticed that a phone number on one of the vehicles appeared to be incomplete. As she turned her car around, she observed men in balaclavas fleeing into nearby fields and trees. She immediately contacted the police, alerting them to the suspicious activity near the airbase, which had reportedly been on high alert due to a credible terror threat.
Armed police rapidly responded to the scene, establishing a cordon and arresting five men. Video and images from the scene showed the men shirtless and handcuffed, with authorities suggesting this posture might indicate suspicion of suicide vests. The men were reportedly heading towards RAF Fairford, an airbase that supports US Air Force operations, including those against Iran.
According to the farmer, she saw more than five individuals, a detail she raised despite only five arrests being made. She described the occupants of the vans as appearing to be "Middle Eastern-looking young guys." She also noted that one of the vans bore the name "FUEL 2YOU" with a shortened phone number, and a company with that name stated both its vans were in London at the time.
The farmer recounted attempting to contact the airbase police directly but receiving no answer, which prompted her to dial 999. She expressed disbelief that security forces did not detect the suspicious activity earlier, stating, "A plucky amateur shouldn't be spotting an unusual bit of activity at 1am when the air base is on high alert." She added that she felt "quite lucky" considering the potential danger.
The incident led to a significant police response, including a helicopter search operation and the deployment of a bomb disposal robot to examine the three white vans.
Residents of the village, which has a population of about 100, were evacuated from their homes. Many reported being woken by helicopters in the early hours and subsequently by police knocking on their doors, instructing them to leave for their safety. They were taken to a leisure center approximately ten miles away.
Temporary Chief Constable for Gloucestershire Police, Maggie Blyth, indicated that the force is not currently seeking additional suspects in connection with the incident. The farmer's actions have been widely praised by residents and commentators for potentially preventing a serious attack.
