Farmer Convicted of Criminal Damage for Tractor-Tractor Truck Relocation

A land dispute between two Welsh farmers culminated in a court conviction for criminal damage after one man used his tractor to move his neighbor's truck. Cerdin Jones, 53, was captured on video lifting his neighbor Anwen Hughes' Fiat Fullback truck with the arms of his Massey Ferguson tractor and carrying it approximately 20 yards down their shared narrow lane. The incident occurred on August 9 of the previous year, stemming from an ongoing feud over access and property rights in Llanarth, Ceredigion, west Wales.

Aberystwyth Magistrates' Court heard that while the lane was owned by Ms. Hughes, Mr. Jones possessed a right of way to access his farmland. Following the tractor maneuver, Ms. Hughes' truck sustained over £5,000 in damage and was subsequently written off. The court was shown footage of the incident, which occurred in the presence of a herd of sheep.

Mr. Jones pleaded not guilty to criminal damage but was convicted on September 10 at Aberystwyth Magistrates' Court. In addition to the conviction, he was ordered to pay £650 in costs and a £150 surcharge. A restraining order was also imposed, prohibiting Mr. Jones from entering Ms. Hughes' farm or accessing the lane where the incident took place.

According to a Facebook post by Ms. Hughes in January of this year, the feud with her neighbor had lasted for six years. She described instances of intimidation, including being driven close to, and feeling unsafe on her property. She also alleged that Mr. Jones had belittled her and made her feel paranoid, impacting her ability to work the land and care for her animals. Ms. Hughes also stated that Mr. Jones had called her names and had previously entered her home making accusations.

The court proceedings and the resolution of this particular dispute highlight the escalated tensions between the neighbors, with the tractor incident resulting in significant vehicle damage and legal consequences for Mr. Jones.
