Nigel Farage, who successfully won the Clacton seat in the 2024 general election, faces a varied slate of candidates in the upcoming by-election. UK electoral law permits registered political parties to field multiple candidates in a parliamentary by-election, provided each nominee has a valid nomination and is authorized by the party's nominating officer.

Candidates are not required to reside in the constituency they wish to represent but must be nominated by 10 local residents. A deposit of £500 is necessary to validate their candidacy, which is refunded only if they secure more than 5% of the vote share. This contrasts with mayoral elections, such as in London, which have more stringent eligibility rules and higher deposit requirements.

Among the contenders is Nick the Incredible Flying Brick from the Monster Raving Loony Party. He has participated in numerous elections, including 13 parliamentary contests and several mayoral races. Despite his extensive electoral history, he has consistently polled below 1% and has lost all his deposits. The Baron, also known as Peter Berry, has a political history dating back to 2001, with his best result being 1.3%. While his vote share in subsequent parliamentary contests remained below 1%, it saw a general increase between 2010 and 2019 before a slight fall in 2024. He has lost all six of his deposits.

Laurence Fox, a more recent contender, has participated in two major elections. He saw his vote share increase from 1.9% in the 2021 London mayoral election to 2.3% in the 2023 Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election. He has lost two deposits totaling £10,500.

William Clouston has contested two parliamentary elections, increasing his vote share from 0.6% in 2019 to 2.3% in 2024. He has forfeited both of his parliamentary deposits, amounting to £1,000.

John Stevens stands out as an outlier among the smaller candidates. He achieved a notable 21.4% in the 2010 Buckingham general election, where major parties did not field candidates. His other results have ranged from approximately 0.4% to 3.8%. Stevens is the only candidate among this group to have retained a parliamentary deposit, although he has lost three, forfeiting a total of £1,500.

Other candidates include Count Binface, who has stood in parliamentary and mayoral contests since 2019, with vote shares fluctuating between 0.1% and 1%. He has lost all six of his deposits, totaling £22,000. Joseph 77 (Tom Darwood) has shown gradual improvement in his vote share over several elections, peaking at 1.2% in the 2019 general election, but has lost all seven of his deposits, costing £3,500. Howling Laud Hope, leader of the Monster Raving Loony Party, has contested the most elections, over 37 contests, but has lost all his deposits, forfeiting £18,150.

Farage himself has a history of standing in parliamentary contests, having contested seven previous elections before becoming an MP for Clacton in the 2024 general election. Clacton by-election ballot paper shown on a table next to an extended tape measure for scale
