Progressive Twitch streamer Hasan Piker stated that the Middle East would experience increased stability if Iran possessed nuclear weapons, citing the principle of "mutually assured destruction" as a deterrent for international conflict. Piker made these remarks in an interview with Axios correspondent Alex Thompson.

"I think Iran, much like any other sovereign nation, has a right to defend itself, regardless of its domestic policies," Piker told Axios. He further elaborated by referencing political scientist John Mearsheimer, arguing that "mutually assured destruction is the only way for countries to have sovereignty."

Piker extended this logic to other nations, saying, "It’s the same principle that I apply to Ukraine as well: Countries that would have nuclear arms in an age of nuclear proliferation are the only countries that can generate true sovereignty." He clarified, "Now, having said that, do I want Iran to have nuclear arms? No. But I also don’t want America, or Russia, or China to have nuclear arms, either."

Regarding Iran's nuclear program, Piker suggested that the conversation surrounding enriched uranium is a "distraction." He contended that the Iranian government has consistently used this issue as leverage to negotiate sanctions relief with the United States.

Piker, who has a substantial online following, has previously courted controversy for remarks such as suggesting the U.S. "deserved" the 9/11 attacks, a statement he has since partially retracted, and expressing admiration for Chinese Communist dictator Mao Zedong. He has also been a vocal surrogate for left-wing political candidates, notably supporting Michigan Senate contender Abdul El-Sayed.

El-Sayed publicly distanced himself from Piker's more controversial statements, including remarks comparing U.S. actions to Al Qaeda. "I do not agree with this statement, nor do I give much weight to the statements made by a social media streamer," El-Sayed stated, emphasizing his focus on policy issues affecting his constituents. Piker has also identified U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as his preferred candidate for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination.
