A group of eight fans were ejected from a Portland Thorns NWSL match on September 6 for allegedly distributing "unapproved materials," a claim disputed by the fans involved. The Portland Thorns organization stated that the removals were a violation of stadium policies aimed at fostering a safe and inclusive environment.
Amy Sousa, part of the ejected group, denied the organization's claim, stating in a statement that they did not distribute any materials. Sousa asserted that the group was targeted due to their political beliefs, which she expresses online, and were wearing apparel supporting women's sports. The group's attire included shirts with messages such as "Save Women’s Sports," "Girls just wanna have fundamental rights," "Woman," and "It’s common sense," along with XX-XY Athletics apparel.
Sousa said the group brought printed copies of the NWSL and Providence Park codes of conduct to reference, as they had been warned about potential issues by a local activist. She claimed the copies were only shared among their own group while seated and that their XX/XY clothing was not visible upon entering the stadium. Video footage from the event appears to show security personnel escorting the group out after a dispute over whether materials were being distributed.
The group's experience extended beyond the stadium. After leaving Providence Park, they visited The Sports Bra, a local bar that supports women's sports. According to reports, members of the group were later asked to leave the bar after staff perceived their apparel as "transphobic."
The Sports Bra released a statement on social media explaining their decision, reiterating their mission to support and empower all girls and women in sports. The bar stated that while they welcome individuals of all identities, they do not tolerate messages that demean or exclude the community they serve. They asserted that the group wore apparel advocating for the exclusion of trans women from sports, and when asked to cover the messaging or leave, they chose to depart.
The Portland Thorns spokesperson reiterated their commitment to a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all fans and stated that the matter was under investigation. The incident highlights ongoing discussions within women's sports regarding inclusivity and the expression of views on gender identity.
