FanDuel allegedly used a personalized video message from Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper to retain a customer described as a problem gambler, according to a report by The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The video, sent by a FanDuel VIP manager to customer Terry Thompson, reportedly featured Harper wishing Thompson a happy Thanksgiving, acknowledging his son, and thanking him for his years of support.

Thompson, who had wagered $18.5 million on FanDuel and lost $1.5 million, was reportedly given VIP treatment, including gifts and tickets, rather than being restricted from further betting. The use of Harper, a two-time National League MVP, in such a marketing effort has drawn criticism.

This incident highlights broader concerns about the relationship between Major League Baseball, its players, and sportsbooks. Reports indicate that the MLB Players Association (MLBPA) had sought clarity on endorsement deals with sportsbooks during collective bargaining negotiations, while also proposing less stringent penalties for players caught illegally betting on baseball.

Critics argue that while the MLBPA expresses concerns about players facing harassment from bettors and has even suggested banning player prop bets, the league and its associated partners are simultaneously engaging in practices that may exploit vulnerable individuals. The union's alleged push for a short minor-league "rehab assignment" for players violating betting rules is contrasted with the aggressive marketing tactics employed by sportsbooks.

The report suggests that partnerships between leagues, players, and sportsbooks can lead to recognizable athletes being used in potentially predatory marketing schemes. The practice of displaying "responsible gaming" logos during broadcasts is questioned when such incidents occur, leading to accusations that the ecosystem prioritizes revenue over fan and player well-being.
