This incident occurred the day before two separate fatal collisions involving vehicles traveling on the wrong side of the road. On the A66 near Middlesbrough, a head-on collision between a police car and a Volkswagen Passat traveling the wrong way resulted in the deaths of two police officers and five occupants of the Passat. The five young men in the Passat, aged 17 to 23, had extensive criminal records. This crash followed a police pursuit of the Passat, which had been reported for dangerous driving, along with a second vehicle, a Volvo XC60.

Less than a week prior, five teenagers died in a head-on crash on the M9 in County Kildare, Ireland, while driving against traffic. The five boys, aged 17 and 18, were in a car that collided with another vehicle. Three women and a seven-year-old boy in the other car sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized. Authorities stated that the five teenagers in the car driving the wrong way had died.
