Family's Sailing Adventure Doubles Expenses Upon Return to UK

A family who spent eight years sailing around the world has found their monthly expenses have doubled since returning to the UK, attributing the increase to the nation's cost of living. Alan and Irenka Wood, with their three children, embarked on their journey in 2017 from Greece on their sailboat.

During their eight-year voyage, the family sailed over 40,000 nautical miles, visiting more than 40 countries. While at sea, their outgoings averaged approximately £1,500 per month. Upon their return to Brighton, East Sussex, their expenses have risen to nearly £3,000 monthly. This rise is attributed to increased energy bills, general amenities, and school expenses for their sons, Darroch, 17, and Yewan, 14.

Alan Wood, an author, described the adjustment back to life in Britain as a significant change. "It was an amazing adventure for us as a family, but the adjustment back to real life has taken us aback," he stated. He noted that his youngest son, Yewan, has spent more years of his life at sea than on land, making the transition to a regular school day a notable shift.
