Family of Thai Teen Found Dead in Suitcase Sues Australian Truck Driver
The family of Tunchanok Donhomla, 17, has filed a civil lawsuit seeking over $51,000 in compensation from Simon Peter Carman, accused of her murder.
The family of Tunchanok Donhomla, a 17-year-old Thai girl whose body was found in a suitcase, has launched a civil lawsuit against the Australian truck driver accused of her murder. Simon Peter Carman, 45, from Perth, is awaiting trial for the alleged murder of Donhomla, who was found near railway tracks on the outskirts of Pattaya on June 27, two days after she was last seen alive.
If convicted of the murder, Carman could face the death penalty in Thailand. The civil lawsuit seeks more than $51,000 in compensation. Tunchanok's cousin, Khanitta, stated that the lawsuit is not primarily about financial compensation but rather about seeking justice for the young woman. "She should have had a future that went much further than this," Khanitta said in a translated interview with the ABC.
Carman has pleaded not guilty to the charges, asserting he acted in self-defense. He claims the teenager attacked him with a knife during an argument over money and that he hid her body because he did not trust the police. He was arrested at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport while attempting to board a flight to Perth.
In a previous interview from Pattaya Remand Prison, Carman expressed deep sadness, stating the incident was unavoidable. He recounted a struggle where he attempted to restrain Donhomla after she allegedly attacked him with a knife. He also claimed he was unaware of her age at the time and that she had followed him to his accommodation. An autopsy revealed Tunchanok died from a brain injury and suffocation, with no other injuries noted. Investigators matched Carman's DNA to samples found on the victim.
Donhomla had traveled from her home in northern Thailand for a holiday and to visit friends. She met Carman on Jomtien Beach and reportedly gave him her address. A friend reported her missing to police the day after she was last seen, and later confronted Carman at his condo. Police allege Carman suffocated Donhomla and placed her body in a suitcase before abandoning it.
Carman is scheduled to appear in court on Monday for trial date determination, which will mark the first time his accusers' family will be in his presence.
