The family of Michael Dyer, a 63-year-old security guard, has released a statement detailing their grief and financial needs following his alleged murder. Dyer was reportedly killed on August 5 while on shift at the Sands of Kahana resort in Maui.

Authorities allege that Legend Storer, a 20-year-old former college swimmer, struck Dyer with a five-gallon water bottle. Following the alleged assault, Storer reportedly engaged in a naked disturbance in the neighborhood until apprehended by law enforcement. Storer, a two-time Maui Interscholastic champion, has been indicted by a grand jury and faces charges including second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, and indecent exposure. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Dyer was married to Joy Dyer for 26 years. His family has established a GoFundMe campaign to raise $20,000 for funeral expenses and to provide support for Joy Dyer, including therapy sessions and assistance with rent and groceries. The family's statement highlighted the emotional toll of the event and Joy Dyer's difficulty in asking for help.

Surveillance footage, though not publicly released, allegedly shows Storer attacking Dyer. Approximately an hour after the incident, police received reports of a naked individual in the vicinity. Officers located Storer, who was suffering from abrasions, and transported him to a hospital. Investigators later identified him as the suspect in Dyer's assault by reviewing the security video.

Court documents indicate that due to the victim's age, prosecutors are seeking sentencing enhancements against Storer, which could include extended prison time and a mandatory minimum sentence without parole if convicted. He was also charged with indecent exposure.

Storer previously attended Concordia University Irvine for one year before transferring to the University of Hawaii. He competed on the men's swim team before the program was discontinued in May 2025. A representative from Concordia University Irvine confirmed that Storer did not re-enroll after the program's dissolution. Storer was initially charged in Maui District Court on August 7, 2026, and formally indicted by a grand jury on August 10, 2026.
