The family of Stacy Hunter, who was killed by her estranged husband weeks after he was released on bail, are advocating for increased intervention by authorities in domestic abuse cases. Stacy's family now prefers to use her maiden name, Hunter, rather than her husband's name, Mair. They stated that court orders for her husband to avoid Stacy had no impact, citing his coercive and controlling behavior.
"There was nothing in place to deter him or make him think about it, of consequences, no fear," one family member said. "It was only a piece of paper in the end to him and someone telling him not to do it. With his coercive and controlling behaviour, he wouldn't listen to it."
Sean and Ann, who consider Stacy's death confirmation that signs of abuse are real and need to be addressed, are scheduled to meet with the First Minister to discuss improved support for women in similar situations. Scotland's victims minister, Kirsten Oswald, expressed her condolences to Stacy's family and emphasized the government's role in combating violence against women and girls. Oswald noted that while court decisions on bail and remand are independent, electronic monitoring is an option for bail conditions.
