Family of Deceased Student Demands Hazing Investigation After Fraternity Event
An 18-year-old college student died after an off-campus fraternity gathering, and his family is seeking answers, particularly regarding why 911 was not called.
The family of Anthony Joseph Blas, an 18-year-old student at California State University Fullerton, is calling for a thorough investigation into his death following an off-campus fraternity event. Blas died early Sunday after being transported to St. Jude Medical Center unresponsive.
Hospital staff were unable to save the student, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Fullerton police stated that their preliminary investigation suggests alcohol may have contributed to Blas's death, but they have not found evidence of foul play or that hazing was a factor. The official cause and manner of death are pending determination by the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office.
Blas's family has expressed deep concern about the circumstances surrounding his death, particularly the fact that emergency services were not contacted when he became unresponsive. "One of the most troubling questions for our family is why 911 was not called when Anthony was found unresponsive," the family said in a statement. "We want to know what happened in the hours leading up to his death, who was present, when those present realized he was in distress, and why 911 was never contacted."
The family identified the fraternity allegedly connected to the gathering as Delta Chi. They are urging authorities and university officials to conduct a comprehensive examination to determine if hazing played a role in the tragedy. The family has emphasized that they are not assigning blame to any specific individual at this stage but are seeking facts, accountability, and answers.
Relatives have also appealed to anyone who attended the gathering or has information, including photos, videos, texts, or social media posts from that night, to preserve and provide such materials to investigators.
Records indicate that the Delta Chi chapter at Cal State Fullerton had its recognition revoked previously due to multiple alleged violations, including hazing, drug and alcohol offenses, and conduct that threatened the health or safety of the university community, according to the student newspaper, the Daily Titan.
Cal State Fullerton confirmed Blas's death and stated that the university is providing support to the campus community. "Our hearts are with the student’s family and the campus community during this incredibly difficult time," a university spokesperson said. Counseling services are available to students, and the university has referred further inquiries regarding the ongoing investigation to the Fullerton Police Department.
Police records indicate that authorities responded to a call in the 2100 block of Teri Place early Sunday in connection with the case. Cal State Fullerton police also initiated an investigation at the same location shortly thereafter, with Fullerton police confirming the agencies were investigating the same incident.
